Merseyside takes centre stage

The 216th Merseyside derby takes centre stage on Saturday as Liverpool make the short trip to Goodison Park to play Everton. ESPNSTAR.com has your preview.
These two old foes lock horns once again but this time with more than just local bragging rights at stake. The Toffees currently sit in 11th place in the Barclays Premier League standings but can go above their Merseyside neighbours with a win, while the fifth-placed Reds can strengthen their top four aspirations with victory on Saturday.

The name "Gandhi" is synonymous with peace and non-violence. His epic struggle to bring together the people of India in their search for sovereignty is unparalleled. This great man's wisdom and foresight are compelling. On this page, you will find ten of the most powerful Gandhi quotes.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?

The moment the slave resolves that he will no longer be a slave, his fetters fall. He frees himself and shows the way to others. Freedom and slavery are mental states.

Non-violence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed.

In my humble opinion, non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good.

That would be a good idea.

On being asked what he thought of modern civilization
Hatred can be overcome only by love.

Love never claims, it ever gives; love never suffers, never resents, never revenges itself. Where there is love there is life; hatred leads to destruction.

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

At the age of the eighteen, he went to England to study law. In 1891, Gandhi returned to India and set up practice at Rajkot. In 1893, he received an offer from an Indian firm in South Africa.

With his two minor sons and Kasturba, he went to South Africa at the age of twenty-four. Colonial and racial discrimination showed its ugly colours in the famous train incident, when he was thrown off the compartment meant for the 'Sahibs'.

During his more than two decades of stay in South Africa, Gandhi protested against the discriminating treatment that was meted out to Indians. He protested against the Asiatic (Black) Act and the Transvaal Immigration Act and started his non-violent civil disobedience movement.

A Satyagrahis' camp known as the Tolstoy Farm was established at Lawley, 21 miles from Johannesburg, on 30th May 1910, in order to shelter the satyagrahis and their families.

Could Defence Cuts Result With Britain Losing The Falkland Islands

Defence Cuts Mean Britain Could Lose The Falkland Islands, Warns Thinktank -- Daily Mail

Crippling defence cuts have left the Falkland Islands vulnerable to attack by Argentina, military grandees warned yesterday.

In a bleak assessment, ex-top brass said Britain's dwindling military budget left the South Atlantic territory a 'plum ripe for picking' if Buenos Aires, backed by ally China, invaded.

The damning report urged ministers to pour billions of pounds into the MoD budget - boosting military spending from 2 to 3 per cent of GDP.

My Comment: Argentina does not have there sources and means to successful invade and occupy the Falklands. If the Chinese help .... probably. But the idea of China getting involved in a conflict in the South Atlantic is a bit of a stretch.

Adebayor says sorry to Arsenal fans

Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor admits he regrets running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans back in 2009.
Adebayor had upset Arsenal fans by leaving to join Barclays Premier League rivals Manchester City, and when the two teams met at the Etihad Stadium in 2009 the Togolese striker further enraged his one-time followers with an ill-advised celebration.
Adebayor netted twice for City in a 4-2 win and then sprinted towards his ex-club's fans before sliding on his knees. The act was widely condemned including by law enforcement officials who were not impressed that Adebayor was trying to incite the crowd in a negative fashion.
However, as he is set to face the Gunners again, this time in the hated colours of Tott [...]

NYT has a big article on the on the Wisconsin-Nebraska game, with copious info about the "Jump Around."

The origin, the history, the engineering. It's all here:
In 1998, during the first night homecoming game for Wisconsin, Kluender was looking for something to keep the crowd energized between the third and fourth quarters. He had a list of suggested songs provided by Ryan Sondrup, an intern in the marketing department and a former Badgers football player. Kluender chose "Jump Around" and looked away from the field to check his notes. When he turned back he said the leaping students looked "like popcorn popping."
Much, much more at the link, such as why you don't have to worry that all that shaking won't collapse the stadium. (People feel like the deck is moving up to 10 inches, but it really only moves 0.4 inches, and it would have to move 12 inches to cause any damage, but movement like that would make everyone fall down, in which case they would not be jumping around.) Grudge derby fixtures dominate BPL

Manchester City begin life without Carlos Tevez at Blackburn this Saturday on a weekend of derby action in the Barclays Premier League.
City have suspended the Argentina international striker, pending a full review into his alleged conduct during the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
Manager Roberto Mancini said immediately after Tuesday's game that, as far as he was concerned, Tevez is "finished'' at City.
Edin Dzeko's place in the first team is far from guaranteed, after his reaction to his substitution at the Allianz Arena, so Italy international striker Mario Balotelli could have a chance to shine if Mancini turns to him for the short trip to Ewood Park.

After It's Fallout With Pakistan, The U.S. Is Looking For New Allies

US Finds New Friend In Uzbekistan After Pakistan Fallout -- The Telegraph

President Obama has asked Uzbekistan to expand its role in resupplying troops in Afghanistan as Washington tries to reduce its dependence on Pakistan.

The past fortnight has seen relations between Islamabad and Washington sink to new lows over allegations that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency was working with the Haqqani network to direct attacks on American targets in Afghanistan.

The crisis, the latest in a turbulent year, has seen both countries scrambling to build up alternative regional alliances.

However, more than a third of supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan pass through Pakistan, giving Islamabad a strong bargaining position.

Hartmann: Could Hacktivists hack a Diebold Machine?

Today we learned that our democracy could be hacked by an eighth grader with 26 bucks. That's what a security assessment team with the US Department of Energy discovered when they successfully hacked into a Diebold electronic voting machine - and were able to change voting results without leaving a trace behind. These are the same guys that make sure the facilities that manufacture nuclear bombs are secure - and the security assessment team leader said about the voting machine hack, "this is a national security issue." Despite all this - in next year's election - 30% of voters are expected to use these very same "hack-easy" voting machines - that the rest of the world have shelved citing security concerns. And today - with the rise of hack-activist groups like Anonymous - this glaring hole in the security of our elections - could be exploited for absurd purposes...and, the nominee is...Scooby Doo?

The FBI Again Thwarts Its Own Terror Plot

Information Clearing House
Glenn Greenwald

September 29, 2011 "Salon" -- The FBI has received substantial criticism over the past decade -- much of it valid -- but nobody can deny its record of excellence in thwarting its own Terrorist plots. Time and again, the FBI concocts a Terrorist attack, infiltrates Muslim communities in order to find recruits, persuades them to perpetrate the attack, supplies them with the money, weapons and know-how they need to carry it out -- only to heroically jump in at the last moment, arrest the would-be perpetrators whom the FBI converted, and save a grateful nation from the plot manufactured by the FBI.

Last year, the FBI subjected 19-year-old Somali-American Mohamed Osman Mohamud to months of encouragement, support and money and convinced him to detonate a bomb at a crowded Christmas event in Portland, Oregon, only to arrest him at the last moment and then issue a Press Release boasting of its success. In late 2009, the FBI persuaded and enabled Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19-year old Jordanian citizen, to place a fake bomb at a Dallas skyscraper and separately convinced Farooque Ahmed, a 34-year-old naturalized American citizen born in Pakistan, to bomb the Washington Metro. And now, the FBI has yet again saved us all from its own Terrorist plot by arresting 26-year-ol [...]

Redknapp relieved after comeback win

Harry Redknapp admitted he was worried a shock was on the cards as Tottenham were forced to come from behind against Shamrock Rovers in the Europa League.
Stephen Rice put the Irish part-timers ahead but three goals in five second-half minutes from Roman Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Giovani Dos Santos saw Tottenham safely home to a 3-1 victory.
The one sour note for Redknapp was an injury to Aaron Lennon, which saw the England winger substituted at half-time with a groin problem that makes him doubtful for the London derby against Arsenal on Sunday.
Redknapp said: "When we went one down we were concerned because you think maybe it's going to be one of those nights.

Tamil Movie Muran Review

Starring: Cheran, Prasanna, Nikita Thukral, Haripriya
Direction: Rajan Madhav
Music: Saajan Madhav
Production: UTV Motion Pictures

It's astonishing how much the oeuvre of the likes of Alfred Hitchcock inspires moviemakers even during these times of technological boom. Although Muran is not the scene to scene adaptation of Hitchcock's 1951 film Strangers on a Train, it takes the basic plot line and expunges the western touch out of it, peppering it with characters and events relevant to our lives. Setting apart the thought about Tamil movies being increasingly inspired by other sources, Muran does what it sets out to do. Read more

Anwar al-Awlaki Dead: What It Means For US, Yemen -- Dan Murphy, Christian Science Monitor

The assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki, a US citizen and Al Qaeda recruiter in Yemen, will be heralded as a major triumph in the US today. But it has very little to do with Yemen's own problems.

Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemeni-American preacher who has emerged in recent years as a recruiter for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, was killed at around 10:00 local time in Yemen this morning, according to Yemen and unnamed US officials.

Same US Military Unit That Got Osama Bin Laden Killed Anwar al-Awlaki -- The Telegraph

Anwar al-Awlaki, a US-born al-Qaeda leader linked to terrorist plots in the UK and US, has been killed in a drone strike in central Yemen, the country's military has announced.

Awlaki was killed in a strike on his convoy directed by the CIA and carried out with the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command's firepower, according to a counterterrorism official.

Ron Paul: US-born al-Qaida cleric 'assassinated'

Associated Press
Steve Peoples

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is condemning the Obama administration for killing an American born al-Qaida operative without a trial.

Paul, a Texas congressman known for libertarian views, says the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki on Yemeni soil amounts to an "assassination." Paul warned the American people not to casually accept such violence against U.S. citizens, even those with strong ties to terrorism.

Anwar al-Awlaki was considered one of the most influential al-Qaida operatives wanted by the United States. U.S. and Yemen officials say he was killed in a U.S. air strike targeting his convoy Friday morning.

Paul made the comments to reporters after a campaign stop Friday at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He said America's leaders must think hard about "assassinating American citizens without charges."
